Internet Connectivity

The Internet consists of high speed circuits connecting routers that transmit data in the form of IP packets. The circuits are maintained by large telco’s like MCI, Sprint, Worldcomm the routers are owned by ISP’s. The national ISP’s such as MCI, UUNet, AGIS, EUNet, SprintNet , VSNL lease circuits from the telco’s to connect their routers in their various Points Of presence (POPs). Regional and local ISP’s purchase connections from the national ISP’s. The national ISP’s have connections to the Network Access Points (NAPs) where they exchange routes and traffic. Thus the Internet Backbone is really several backbones owned by the National ISP’s that come together at the various NAP’s. DOT is planning to put together a national backbone to cater the demand from ISPs from across the country. You need to buy your Internet bandwidth from the local NSP

One of the most controversial aspects of Internet provider lore is how much load you can put on your system and its Internet connection before things become intolerable to your customers.

The 64k option looks like an extraordinarily unhappy compromise.  Obviously, nobody's going anywhere on a 64k connection unless they either charge a lot more than the going rate as I know it, or bend the rules to the breaking point. However, it certainly is a way to get to know your router and CSU/DSU without spending massive amounts on them.

If you are lucky enough to be able to afford a T1 connection to the Internet, and have a successful marketing plan, the T1 option is very clearly an excellent viable business. At this level, you could also resell 64k network connections to companies that needed their own net presence.

The cost of an Internet connection is related to the bandwidth. The higher the bandwidth the higher the cost. Purchasing a given bandwidth link with an Internet provider does not guarantee that bandwidth on any particular connection. If your company connects to a server in another country the bandwidth of the connection between your machine and the remote server will depend on the bandwidths of all the networks which your link traverses and their current utilization (load) together with the performance of all the routers in between.

You can obtain more information on how to get a leased line from VSNL or DoT at Balasai Net.
